Active Directory Migration from Server 2003 to 2008

An interviewer asked me while an interview "how will you perform an AD Migration from 2003 to 2008" - I was just spellbound(my mistake I dint care to study). But I'm back with a simplified approach and determination cto make this like a piece of cake!!!!!!!

                                                                  AD Migration

Steps Summary:

1. adprep /forestprep
2. adprep /domainprep
3. Start Installation from Disc

Things to Note:

* Domain must be in Native Mode
*W2K3 SP2 is a must
*Installation must be started from the OS itself and not by booting from the disc

Explanation: Native & Mixed Modes
To maintain backward compatibility with earlier versions of NT, Microsoft allows Windows 2000 to run in mixed mode or native mode. If you’re running mixed mode, you’re missing out on some of Windows 2000’s new features and advantages. In this Daily Feature, I’ve explained the differences between these modes, and I have shown you how to make the switch from mixed mode to native mode.

Procedure:

* adprep /forestprep
Locate the "adprep" file from the <cddrive>:\sources\adprep folder .ie on the Server 2008 Disc
Open cmd and drag & drop the adprep.exe file and add /forestprep or type the command <cddrive>:\sources\adprep\adprep.exe /forestprep

You'll receive a message to confim the process- Press C and hit Enter
This complete the /forestprep area

* adprep /domainprep
follow the same procedure and replace command with <cddrive>:\sources\adprep\adprep.exe /domainprep

This command might give an error and stop if your domain is in a MIxed mode rather than a Native Mode

To fix this:

1.Raise the Domain Functional Level

Goto: AD Users and Computers-> Right Click on Domain (for eg:phoenix.com)-> Select Raise Domain Functional Level(DFL) and raise the DFL to Windows Server 2003- Click OK

2.Raise the Forest Functional Level

Goto: AD Domains and Trusts-> Right Click on Root(ie: AD Domains & Trusts)-> Select Raise Forest Functional Level(FFL) and raise the FFL to Windows Server 2003- Click OK

Now, Try the DomainPrep once again- Should complete successfully

This step will enable the Upgrade option and Go ahead just perform the installation
