Use Lync 2010 client in Office Communications Server 2007 R2 environment

Now we all admins know users and their "enthusiastic" demands. A same sort of demand came in from one of our users who wanted to work specifically on Lync 2010 client knowing our server is still on Office Communications Server 2007 R2.

After some search I found out that this can be done with a tweak in the registry so here are the steps to perform the same if you ever get in need of this.

NOTE:
As the server is still on an older version so the client might not be able to perform some functions.

Download the Lync 2010 client and install it on your computer.

The client is generally blocked due to a version check that done. In this post we'll mainly work on disabling the version check and it should take care of further issues.

Open Registry Editor and browse to the following resgistry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Communicator

And now add a new DWROD with the following entries:

Name:  DisableServerCheck
Type: DWORD
Value: 1

Now restart Lync and you should be able to login.
