Microsoft's' Run in the MDM Race - System Center Mobile Device Manager
In this post we will track where Microsoft stands in the MDM Race and what their new Solution SCMDM 2012 has to offer. We have seen tons of MDM vendors piling up in this race and each one with their unique offerings. Microsoft though leads the Client-Server market globally but its yet to receive the same kind of success when it comes to Windows Phone or its Surface offerings. So we thought to delve more onto their strategies and concepts regarding MDM.
Release:
Microsoft released its first installment of a Mobile Device Management solution back in April 2008 as System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 which was limited to supporting Windows Mobile devices. The latest offering is System Center 2012 R2.
The Product:
As per Microsoft, SCMDM 2012 now offers the ability to integrate with their Cloud Based solution of Windows InTune and provide a solution that caters to both traditional enterprise client devices and BYOD mobile devices – including Windows RT, Windows Phone, Apple iOS ( iPads and iPhones ) and Android mobile devices. Once the initial configuration is completed, System Center 2012 Configuration Manager provides a unified console for managing applications, inventory, and compliance policies across these very different sets of devices to balance flexibility in device choices with strong IT management options.
As per Microsoft Experts Bill Anderson and David Tesar, The SCMDM 2012 divides device management into 2 categories:
Light Management
Light management deals with the most basic features that every MDM Solution provides with a combination of EAS policies.
Supported Features:
Depth Management:
Deals with an in-depth management solution for Windows Mobile & Nokia Symbian devices but with limited features for other EAS connected devices. The feature set below will give you a better idea of the features available.
