Invalid configuration file. xxx was created by a VMware product with more features than this version of VMware Workstation and cannot be used with this version of VMware Workstation.

Error:
Invalid configuration file. xxx was created by a VMware product with more features than this version of VMware Workstation and cannot be used with this version of VMware Workstation.

Cause:
The Virtual Hardware version on which the .ova file was created doesn't match

Resolution:
1. Power off the VM
2. Locate the .vmx config file for the VM and create a backup before performing any further steps.
3. Open with Notepad and search for virtualhw.version = "9" ( the number here corresponds to the VMWare Workstation version the file was made on)
4. Change the version number to your VMWare Worskstation version. for example virtualhw.version = "8"
5. Save the file and now try to open the VM
