Error: Failed to lock the file - Cannot open the disk *.vmdlk or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

Error: VMWARE – FAILED TO LOCK THE FILE 


This error comes up when trying to open a .vmdk file in vmware Workstation. This has a real quick fix but can keep you guessing the whole day.

Resolution: To solve this issue open the folder that the virtual machine files. You might find a couple of folders that are named as ***.lck. Select them all and Delete or rename them. 


This should put you back on track.
